Yay for Saturdays! Yay for visits from Lolli & Pops!

Lolli and Pops came to visit today!

It's so nice outside, we decided to get out Mason's pool and play in the water.  He wasn't so sure at first, but seemed to enjoy it after a few minutes.  I can't wait to see him in the water later this summer when he's old enough to realize what's going on!

All that playing in the water made Mason hungry, so we had to come inside for a bottle.  After all, he is a GROWING boy!  Tomorrow we plan to start working on our garden so hopefully I will have more pics to share tomorrow afternoon.  Happy Weekend!

Mason is Growing Everyday

Here are a couple of pics I snapped of Mason this week.  He is growing like a weed!

Living Room Transformation - DIY Built-Ins

Here at the Fones' home we are always busy tackling DIY projects.  Since I have an Interior Design degree, and my husband is quite the handyman, we seem to make a good team.  It never seems to matter how outrageous my ideas are, he's always up for the challenge (thank you baby).

Lately we've been doing a lot of work on our living room, and I couldn't be happier with the progress we've made.  Other than buying new furniture, the biggest change came in the form of DIY built-ins that are to die for!  It was so simple and inexpensive, I can't believe we didn't do it sooner.  And not only did we create loads of extra storage (gotta have somewhere to keep all this baby stuff), but it makes the room seem SO MUCH BIGGER!

Here's how we tackled the "built-ins"....I'll post final pics of the entire room later this weekend.  Enjoy!

After I measured our wall and came up with a layout, we bought 5 individual bookcases from Target for $20 each - much cheaper than lumber, huh?

Next we attached the bookcases to one another with screws so they became one single unit.  We also added some trim pieces to make the bookcases have a more custom look.

You'll also notice that we simply used the white backs that are standard on these bookcases, but you could cover with wallpaper or fabric, or even paint these if you wanted.  One suggestion if you choose to do this - apply your finish to the ugly brown side of the back so that if you change your mind later, you can flip it back to the white side.

Next we added the top.  We used MDF, and had the nice people at Lowe's cut it into three pieces.  Once this is glued and screwed down, you can apply wood filler to the seams then sand and paint, and no one will ever know that this isn't one huge piece!  We also bought some chair railing / crown molding pieces and attached across the front of the bookcases for a final finishing touch.  Sorry, I don't have any pictures from this step of the process, but you can see it on the finished product.

Here's where we took a little detour from the bookcases, and worked on a part of the project that was  a little more labor intensive.  My husband definitely wanted the TV to hang on the wall above the bookcases, but I did not want cords running down the wall.  So...we made a cut-out in the wall behind the TV and ran the power cord, HDMI cord, etc. down the inside of the wall.  Then, we made another hole at the bottom (behind the bookcases) for the cords to come out and then plug into the electrical outlet.  We also cut out a square access flap in the back of one of the bookcases so we can still get to the cords and the electrical outlet.  This was a lot of work, but totally worth it in the end.
this is just the rough opening we made; this was later covered with
an outlet plate
After all the pieces were together and the wires for the TV were hidden, we picked up this beast of a bookcase and moved it back against the wall.  (We also removed the base board trim from the wall so that the cases could sit flush against the wall).  To finish up, we sanded everything down really well and gave it all a nice fresh coat of glossy white paint.
from this angle, you can see how we pulled the middle 3
bookcases forward to give the built-ins some depth
Construction is done!
I"m still working on the display part of this project...I move books and frames and vases around almost daily trying to get just the right look.  We will eventually put baskets along the bottom shelves for easy access to Mason's toys.

I'll post some more pictures of the entire room once we have everything looking nice!

Happy Saturday from Mason!

Pics from Mason's Easter Photo Shoot

Here are the other pictures I took of Mason for his Easter Photo Shoot...I don't know how I ever narrowed it down to three for the actual Easter card.  They're all so cute!

Back to Reality

such a big boy
Well, we made it!  This was Mason's first week of Day Care and Mommy's first week back to work.  Monday was a LONG day, but I think we handled it pretty well.  Mason seems to really enjoy Day Care, and his teachers all love on him and talk about how precious he is.  He doesn't nap there quite as well as he does at home, but I think that's because he's just too interested in what the other babies are doing.

Mason is continuing to grow so much, and entertains us with his sweet noises.  He has slept really well this week....we even had to wake him up yesterday morning so he could eat before we left home!  Here are some shots I got of him this week.

So glad that it's finally the weekend so we can hang out as a family and enjoy each other's company.  We've already started it out right with steaks hot off the grill and a nice glass of wine to help me unwind from a long week back in the real world!

Beach - Day 2

We had another amazing day on the beach.  Mason slept so good last night...fell asleep around 10:15 (without even finishing his bottle) and woke up at 6:30 this morning.  The beach wore him out!  Not ready to go home tomorrow, but already planning a trip to come back at the end of the Summer.  No telling how much trouble Mason will be able to get into then!

Mason's First Trip to the Beach

Today was a long, but fun day with my boys.  Casey, Mason, Auburn (my youngest brother) and I left our house around 6:30 this morning to head to the beach.  Mason slept almost the entire time we were in the car so that made the day go by pretty quickly.  He is such a good boy!

We went out to enjoy the beach for just a little while when we arrived, and Mason loved the sand!  Here are a few shots from the day...
Looking forward to another fun day tomorrow!

New Breakfast Recipe

So, I've been obsessing over finding yummy (and healthy) recipes for this Summer.  The hubs and I are trying really hard to eat good and exercise...gotta get this baby weight off ASAP!  Anyway, Pinterest has been the easiest way for me to find and organize recipes that I want to try before I commit to them and add them to my lovely handmade cookbook made by the fabulous Jenna Puckett.  Here's one we tried this weekend that was amazing...

It turned out well, and was pretty yummy!  We love asparagus, so any meal that I can add it to is pretty awesome.  This one will definitely be added to the cookbook!

March

Mason had a busy month!  He started sleeping in his crib instead of in Mommy and Daddy's room, he rolled over from his tummy to his back, he started having some rice cereal in his bottles before bedtime, he Skyped on Facebook with his Lolli and Pops, and started drinking formula! Wow - what a growing boy.  He has started to develop quite the personality, and entertains Mommy all day long with his sweet coos and caas.  Here are some pictures I captured throughout the month of March.  Enjoy!

i heart weekends

Even though I've been on maternity leave since mid-January, I still look forward to the weekend.  It's a time for us to be home as a family and do whatever WE want to do...whether that be shopping, DIYing, cleaning (but let's be honest - this happens rarely), or just hanging out.  We have no set schedule and no particular place to be, and it's the best feeling!  Since Mason was born, we have lots of visitors on the weekends - so it's also nice to know we can still see lots of our friends and family without actually having to get ready and leave the house :)

I decided to start this blog about our family because I figure most of my friends on Facebook who don't have kids (and are sick of seeing a million pictures and updates about mine) can take a break and hopefully not de-friend me.  For those of you who do enjoy seeing pictures of Mason and reading about his EVERY breath, you've come to the right place!

Okay, now back to what I was saying about weekends...this weekend has been particularly nice, but for no particular reason :)  Mason is sleeping better and better every night, so his Daddy and me are actually feeling rested in the mornings now.  Yesterday we decided to travel to Nashville and check out Opry Mills mall since its grand re-opening last week.  What we didn't realize was that everyone else in the middle Tennessee area would have the same thoughts!  We met our good friends, Lance and Helena, and spent some time walking around and spending money (which I happen to be really good at).  All in all, it was a good time despite the massive crowds.  Today we have nowhere to be and hope to get some work done in our backyard.  Maybe I can even talk my husband into grilling me something yummy tonight for dinner.
